Two kinds of jokers

Printed jokers are the dedicated joker cards included in the deck. A wild joker is created when one card is selected after the deal; every card of that rank becomes a wild joker for that deal.

Both types can normally substitute for a missing card in an impure sequence or set.

Jokers in sequences

A joker can fill a missing position in an impure sequence, provided the natural cards still follow one suit and a valid order. It cannot be used as a substitute inside the pure sequence required for a valid declaration.

• 7♥–Joker–9♥: impure sequence
• 4♣–5♣–6♣: pure sequence
• 7♥–Joker–9♣: invalid because the natural suits conflict

Jokers in sets

A joker can complete a group of equal-ranked cards, such as 8♣–8♦–Joker. Natural cards in a set are normally from different suits. With multiple decks, agree whether duplicate suits are allowed.

A wild joker used naturally

Many tables allow a card whose rank is wild to be used in its printed position as a natural card, including in a pure sequence. This convention can vary, so settle it before dealing.

Common joker mistakes

Do not assume a joker automatically makes any group valid. Check the suit, rank order, minimum number of cards, and pure-sequence requirement. Too many jokers can also make it harder to build the required pure run.

• A joker does not repair mixed suits in a sequence
• A joker cannot remove the pure-sequence requirement
• A joker normally carries zero penalty points
• House rules should cover extra or missing printed jokers
